Indian Tsunami Warning System

چکیده

Tsunami is a system of ocean gravity waves formed as a result of large-scale disturbance of the sea floor that occurs in a relatively short duration of time. The Indian Ocean is likely to be affected by tsunamis generated mainly by earthquakes from the two potential source regions, the Andaman-Nicobar-Sumatra Island Arc and the Makran Subduction Zone. A state-of-the-art warning centre has been established at INCOIS with all the necessary computational and communication infrastructure that enables reception of realtime data from the network of national and international seismic stations, tide gauges and bottom pressure recorders (BPRs). Earthquake parameters are computed in the less than 15 minutes of occurrence. A database of pre-run scenarios for travel times and run-up height has been created using Tunami N2 model. At the time of event, the closest scenario is picked from the database for generating advisories. Water level data enables confirmation or cancellation of a tsunami. Tsunami bulletins are then generated based on decision support rules and disseminated to the concerned authorities for action, following a standard operating procedure. The criteria for generation of advisories (warning/alert/watch) are based on the tsunamigenic potential of an earthquake, travel time (i.e. time taken by the tsunami wave to reach the particular coast) and likely inundation. The performance of the system was tested on September 12, 2007 earthquake of magnitude 8.4 off Java coast. The system performed as designed. It was possible to generate advisories in time for the administration and possible evacuation was avoided.

Tsunami warning system using of IoT

Abstract   Today, the world has reached a new nature with advances in science. The Internet of Things is a technology that can connect all objects in different fields through the Internet. Any unforeseen event that destroys economic, social and physical capabilities and inflicts human and financial losses is known as a natural disaster, such as a tsunami. IoT-based tsunami forecasting system ...

Advances in earthquake and tsunami sciences and disaster risk reduction since the 2004 Indian ocean tsunami

The December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was the worst tsunami disaster in the world’s history with more than 200,000 casualties. This disaster was attributed to giant size (magnitude M ~ 9, source length >1000 km) of the earthquake, lacks of expectation of such an earthquake, tsunami warning system, knowledge and preparedness for tsunamis in the Indian Ocean countries. In the last ten years, sei...

Improving tsunami warning systems with remote sensing and geographical information system input.

An optimal and integrative tsunami warning system is introduced that takes full advantage of remote sensing and geographical information systems (GIS) in monitoring, forecasting, detection, loss evaluation, and relief management for tsunamis. Using the primary impact zone in Banda Aceh, Indonesia as the pilot area, we conducted three simulations that showed that while the December 26, 2004 Indi...

Impact of 2004 Tsunami in the Islands of Indian Ocean: Lessons Learned

Tsunami of 2004, caused by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, is the most devastating tsunami in modern times, affecting 18 countries in Southeast Asia and Southern Africa, killing more than 250,000 people in a single day, and leaving more than 1.7 million homeless. However, less reported, albeit real, is its impact in the islands of the Indian Ocean more than 1,000 miles away from its epicenter. This...

How Numerical Simulations May Contribute to Tsunami Risk Preparedness: The 26 December 2004 Indian Ocean Event and the Thailand Case Study

The tsunami information, i.e. the sea level elevation, presents useful features that can be used for different case studies. It can be derived from observations, e.g. tide gages records or anomaly of sea level obtained with altimeters, but also through numerical modeling of the tsunami propagation. Once a robust numerical simulation is performed, the wave sequence, compared to available hydrody...
